Everything this castle is for is underwater.
01What the reservoir took
The Tishrin Dam was completed in 1999 on the Euphrates upstream of Manbij, and the water backed up behind it. At Qal'at Najm the river had been a working channel with two islands in it — the islands that made the crossing possible, that the bridge of boats was anchored to, that gave the place its oldest name. They are gone.
So is the ford, and so is the line of the road on the far side, and so is whatever was standing on the floodplain between the castle and the water. The Euphrates valley is one of the most densely occupied archaeological landscapes on earth, and reservoirs on it have a long record of taking sites that were never surveyed. What went under here has not been published in anything we have found.
02What the reservoir gave
It gave the castle a lake. Where there was a river in a valley there is now open water running to the horizon, and the rock stands over it at the same sixty-eight metres it always did — which means the view from the top is better than it has ever been, and the photograph everyone takes of this place is a photograph that did not exist before 1999.
It also gave the castle people. There is a beach at the foot of the mound now. There are reed shelters along the shore, and boats pulled up on the shingle, and families in the shallows, and a line of cars on the road in on a spring weekend. A fortress designed for eight hundred years to stop anyone getting near the water has a swimming spot at the bottom of it.
03The castle is not flooded
It is worth saying plainly, because the two things are easily confused. Qal'at Najm was not submerged and was not moved. It stands where it was built, on its own rock, on the shore. What drowned was the ground it looked down on.
The difference matters for what the place now is. A monument whose whole purpose was the thing in front of it, with the thing in front of it removed, is not a ruin of a castle. It is a castle in full working order with no job.
