- Plan
- An irregular polygon on the summit
- Towers
- Square, semicircular, and many-sided
- The curtain
- No openings to the outside
- Arrow slits
- Inside the towers only
The enceinte is an irregular polygon following the shape of the summit, with towers set along it — square, semicircular, and in places many-sided.
The detail worth noticing is what is missing. The curtain between the towers carries no openings towards the outside at all. The arrow slits are inside the towers, and only there.
That is a deliberate arrangement rather than an economy. An opening is a weakness, so the wall has none; the towers project, so from them you can shoot along the face of the wall itself, and anyone who reaches the foot of the curtain is caught in crossfire from both sides. The wall is not for shooting from. It is for making the towers matter.
Much of the walling is brick, in the manner that was usual in Saladin's time, laid over and around the ashlar of the towers and the gate.
